Central Celebrates Excellence at Year-End Awards

Whanganui, October 15, 2023 – The Whanganui Squash Club was abuzz with excitement and celebration as the Central Squash end-of-year awards ceremony took place during the morning of October 15, 2023. The event, which honoured the achievements and dedication of the squash community, was a resounding success.

The awards ceremony commenced with the acknowledgment of life members, current committee, nominees and finalists who had demonstrated remarkable skills and sportsmanship throughout the year. 

The event saw the following squash enthusiasts receive accolades:

  • Men’s Masters of the Year – Darryl O’Hara
  • Women's Masters of the Year – Pauline Chapman
  • Administrator of the Year – Natalie Lane
  • Volunteer of the Year – Anneka Weterman
  • Coach of the Year – Matthew Laurenson
  • Referee of the Year – Mike Jack
  • Personality of the Year – Brett Cook
  • Most Improved Player (Junior) – Toby Freyria
  • Most Improved Player (Senior) – Frazer Christian
  • Player of the Year – Maximus Mathews
  • Team of the Year – Central 2022 Champion Of Champion’s Team
  • Club of the Year – Ohakune Squash Club

The judges, an esteemed panel of experts, were acknowledged for their meticulous evaluation of nominees and their dedication to maintaining the integrity of the awards process. Their expertise and commitment were crucial in ensuring a fair and transparent selection of the winners.

A highlight of the day was the delicious lunch provided by the Whanganui Squash Club team. It was a delightful spread that received raving reviews from attendees, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the event.

The day concluded just in time for everyone to witness an electrifying moment in the world of squash. Paul Coll, a Kiwi squash superstar, achieved an amazing victory at the USA Open. The audience erupted in cheers as they watched Coll's remarkable performance on the big screen, a fitting end to a memorable awards ceremony.
