SquashGym Palmerston North hosted the annual Central Doubles tournament sponsored by Active Refrigeration over 28- 29th May . The club is one of only a few around New Zealand to have doubles courts which are wider than traditional squash courts. The district was lucky enough to be able to have the entire competition completely on doubles courts.
There were 3 titles up for grabs with the hotly contested Mixed title being won by local players Jason Fletcher who is President of SquashGym and Courtney Trail who plays University Squash in the USA but is back home due to Covid. The pairing had a huge battle in the final up against top A grader Matt Nation also of Palmerston North and partner up and coming junior Abbie Holmes from New Plymouth. Fletcher was on fine form, playing a tight game and giving his younger counterpart very little to work with while Trail was a powerhouse of fast paced shots. Nation and Holmes didn’t miss out on the silverware however as they both took home titles, Matt Nation paired up with Matthew Ratcliffe of Whanganui to take out the mens title which Ratcliffe has won 2 times previously. Abbie Holmes and Courtney Trail joined up and the young guns were unstoppable taking the women's titles with ease over the field.
The social division was won by local couple Iaveta Arthur and Mark Hook.
A big thank you to the tournament sponsors Active Refrigeration and to SquashGym for putting on a very social and fun weekend the music never stopped and everyone had a great time and loads of squash.
